renewable energy - FirstEnergy STEM Grants; Exxon Buys Celtic Explor; Clinton on Energy Diplomacy- Energy Min 10/22/12

FirstEnergy has awarded new STEM grants—Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics--to teachers in Ohio to be used for projects about energy. More than 1000 STEM grants have been given out by FirstEnergy to educators and youth group leaders since 1986. FirstEnergy offers a mix of scrubbed coal, non-emitting nuclear, natural gas, hydro, pumped-storage hydro, and other renewables in its 20000 megawatts of capacity. Exxon Mobil has acquired Celtic Exploration, a Canadian oil and gas company, for $3.1 billion in cash and stock. The purchase is part of the company's continued efforts to expand into the shales of western Canada. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has outlined a plan for "energy diplomacy" to be at the center of US foreign policy. The strategy details how the US can drive economic growth around the world, due to the huge increases in national oil and natural gas production. A dedicated energy bureau was created inside the State Department last year. For more information on these and other stories, go to www.csrminute.com.
