BMW will cut the cost of powering its computing operations by 80 percent by moving power-hungry applications to Verne Global's 100 percent, dual-sourced, renewable-powered data center campus in Iceland. According to the UK-based data center developer, BMW will move intensive applications, including crash simulations, aerodynamic calculations, and computer aided design and engineering. Such high performance computing is associated with high power consumption and carbon emissions from the high-density servers required to run the applications. The US Energy Information Administration has released its winter forecast for 2012-13. US households are expected to use more heating fuel this winter, as temperatures are expected to be near normally cold. Homes that use heating oil, primarily in the Northeast, could see total heating bills above $2000 for the season, as heating oil is expected to average a record high $3.80 a gallon. The one-half of US households that use natural gas may spend an average of $89—15 percent more this winter than last year, which was unusually warm. Eastman Chemical Company has supported a celebration of the EPA's Energy Star program's 20th anniversary in Kingsport, Tennessee.
