Solar Energy - UPS 40 New Hybrids; CBS EcoMedia Funds NYPL Solar ; NSF Climate Change Network- Energy Min 10/9/12

UPS will deploy 40 new hydraulic hybrid vehicles, 20 each in Atlanta and Baltimore. The package cars can achieve up to 35 percent improved fuel economy and up to 30 percent CO2 emissions reduction over traditional diesel-powered vehicles. Both deployments are supported in part by grants from the US Department of Energy's Clean Cities Program. A solar power array has been installed on the Port Washington, New York Public Library as part of its new SBS Roofing system. The solar system will generate an average of over 42000 kilowatts of electricity per year and cut carbon dioxide emissions by over 2.2 million annually. Funding for the project was provided by Winthrop-University Hospital through CBS Ecomedia's EcoAd Advertising program, which connects advertisers with organizations to support local projects. The National Science Foundation has entered into a cooperative agreement with ten US universities and research institutes to study sustainable climate risk management strategies. The NSF Sustainable Research Network will focus on the effects of natural gas development on air and water resources, and on how to adapt to and mitigate the risks of climate change.
