Penn State Professors are going to spend the next couple years looking for Dyson Spheres. Basically massive balls in space that aliens would use to gather solar energy. The only problem with this premise is that there is no proof whether or not these things exist. It's all a mere fabrication, and in my eyes, a waste of time and money. Now in regards to real technology, Natcore Technology is making some real progress. They have created the world's first Black Silico Cell capable to transferring almost 100% of all solar energy absorbed into usable electricity. Many are viewing this as the first commercially viable solution to alternative energy for the future.
