A bill to remove the moratorium on the expansion of nuclear power in Minnesota cleared a key Senate panel Thursday, January 27th. Senate Author Amy Koch, Senate Majority Leader, and Sen. Ellen Anderson, DFL-St. Paul, offer comments about the bill during committee debate. Senators Anderson and Scott Dibble respond to passage of nuclear moratorium bill Legislation to lift the state's ban on building new nuclear power plants in Minnesota was recommended to pass by the Senate Energy, Utilities and Telecommunications Committee Thursday (January 27, 2011) afternoon. Senators Ellen Anderson (St. Paul) and Scott Dibble (Minneapolis) strongly oppose the legislation. Sen. Anderson: "This legislation is moving Minnesota in the wrong direction. Developing new nuclear facilities will take away from our renewable energy and energy efficient industries. Renewable energy means jobs now. Nuclear power promises jobs twenty years from now; if ever. We need to keep our focus on renewable energy. Ratepayers can't afford to pay exorbitant cost overruns that have led ratepayer revolts in other states trying to build nuclear plants." -- Sen. Dibble: "We still don't have a way to permanently and safely dispose of the toxic byproduct produced by a nuclear plant. It is unfair and unwise for us to produce more waste and just hope the next generation of Minnesotans can come up with a solution for disposal.
