renewable energy - Renewable Electricity Outstrips Nuclear & Oil; EPA Energy Star Awarded to ConAgra- Energy Minute
Renewable electricity capacity in the US is now greater than nuclear and oil-powered energy combined. according to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's Office of Energy Projects. Renewable sources now account for almost 15 percent of the total installed operating generating capacity — more than nuclear, 9 percent, and oil, 4 percent, added together. Renewable energy sources installed in the first 10 months of 2012 totaled 46 percent of all new electrical generating capacity. By comparison, nuclear and oil additions represented point 8 percent and point 1 percent of new capacity additions. The EPA has again awarded its Energy Star Certification for best in class performance to four of ConAgra's Lamb Weston plants, re-certifying them for 2012. Lamb Weston is the ConAgra brand that produces potato, sweet potato, and other vegetable products for restaurants, retailers, and food service operators. In 2008, ConAgra and other food companies helped the EPA develop the Energy Performance Indicator tool for measurement of sustainable energy use to determine the Energy Star certification. Potato processing was selected as one of the first types of food plants to benchmark because of the large amounts of energy and water they use.
