It is located approximately eight kilometers (5 miles) southeast of Stuttgart. It was formed in 1975 out of a fusion of the previously separate boroughs of Nellingen (including Parksiedlung), Ruit, Kemnat, and Scharnhausen. The city has approximately 37000 inhabitants. It is part of aa wider geographical-economic region of over five million citizens which is the sixth largest urban area in Germany. Ostfildern is designated by the European Union as one of the main "sustainable cites" which is moving towards the ideal of 100% renewable energy supplies while removing any dependence on imported energy sources.
