The City of Boston received a Solar America City's grant from the Department of Energy for an innovative use of Solar. Boston plans to the use solar as a solution for emergency preparedness. The proposed solutions include a solar and battery back-up at the Public Works Department fueling station, and solar and battery back-up for traffic lights along a designated evacuation route. Currently the fueling station services police and other first responder vehicles. The fueling station already includes a small diesel generator to provide redundant power in case of power grid failure. The new solar and battery back-up will provide power to the fueling station as a first level of redundancy with the generator becoming the second level of redundancy. This not only adds an extra level safety, but also reduces the potential greenhouse gas emissions created from the generator. The solar evacuation route along Blue Hill Avenue, American Legion Hwy, and Hyde Park Avenue includes 18 intersections with traffic lights that are on a new battery back-up system. Four intersections include solar panel systems that provide redundant power to the batteries for traffic lights. The solar array at the Public Works Department's fuel pumping station changed dramatically during the course of project.
