backyard wind generator - Wire Spool VAWT - Renewable Energy Source
For More: onesheetwind.com This turbine I built in the back yard using some plywood, a broken ceiling fan, a large wire spool my dad brought to the house, and a broken old electric scooter. In this video you don't see the turbine, just the little analog multimeter I was able to borrow with it's needle jumping around a bit. With gusts of under 10mph and no steady wind to speak of, there's not a lot of power available to the turbine today. Actual Blade size is 33in wide x 28in tall. I overlapped the tube halves by about 1/3 of the original tube diameter (21 inches or so) in a classic savonius setup. There are times when I can see it wanting to start, and if I go stand in the wind and shield the outer edge of the return side (the highest drag section of the rotation) with my body it starts right up and runs. I'll definitely be looking at some shrouding or baffles for my next turbine.
