Solar Energy - New Video: Port Washington Public Library Goes Solar

At the end of September of 2012 a first-of-its-kind integrated thin film solar power system was installed as part of the Port Washington Public Library's new SBS Roofing system and started generating clean, green renewable power. This newly released video vignette on the project shows the thin film solar cells adhered to the library roof's cap sheet layer. The Port Washington Public Library is the only building in Nassau and Suffolk counties to generate power this way. The solar system is on track to generate an average of over 42000 kWh of electricity per year and cut carbon dioxide emissions from the Library by over 2.2 million pounds annually. The CO2 emission reductions from the Library's new solar system will have the same environmental impact as planting more than 110000 trees, and the new Energy Education Station in the Library displays the actual energy savings from the system for the public's consideration. The new thin film solar PV system was made possible by funding from Wintrhop-University Hospital through its EcoAd advertising as part of the CBS EcoMedia program. About Winthrop-University Hospital Founded in 1896 by a group of local physicians and concerned citizens, Long Island's first voluntary hospital is a 591-bed university-affiliated medical center and New York State-designated Regional Trauma Center which offers sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic care in virtually every specialty and subspecialty of medicine and surgery. Solar Energy - 2000ºF Solar Power

Convert a junk TV into a 2000ºF solar cooker. Here's a technique for hacking a 4 foot mega magnifying lens out of your old TV, and some of the things you can do with it! www.thekingofrandom.com Music by Jason Shaw (RP-MedTempoRock) http Project inspired by: fencekid youtu.be WARNING: This project should not be attempted without adult supervision and adequate training. Misuse, or careless use, of tools or projects may result in serious injury or death. Heat generated from a Fresnel lens can exceed 2000ºF and cause serious damage to persons or property. Use of this video content is at your own risk. PLEASE NOTE: These lenses are found in "rear-projection" televisions and not all are the same. Some are discolored, and some concentrate to a beam rather than a point. The particular screen I found was a crystal clear acrylic lens that focused to a point. It may have been luck that I found it on my first try, because 3 TV's after that all had lesser grade lenses, but still produced enough heat to melt zinc. Just FYI! You can also see youtu.be for examples of these different lenses. These TV's are old, extremely heavy, and are breaking down on people everywhere. They usually cost more to fix than they could be sold for, so people are begging you to come take them away for free! I usually find mine on the classified adds under the "free" section, but they are also common on the sides of streets and alleyways where people have left them for trash.

Solar Energy - Delta Airlines Joins Climate Registry; Study Shows Wind & Solar Could Power US Grid- Energy Minute

Delta Airlines has joined The Climate Registry after completing verification of its greenhouse gas emissions from 2005 through 2010. The airline has lowered its annual emissions by 7.6 million metric tons since 2005, a 17 percent reduction. The decrease was achieved through fuel-saving initiatives such as removing unnecessary weight, installing aircraft winglets, and replacing inefficient aircraft with newer models that produce fewer emissions per passenger. Delta is the first legacy carrier to meet the registry's requirements. Last year, the airline joined the Center for Climate and Energy Solution's Business Environmental Leadership Council. A new study finds that wind and solar energy could power the entire US grid 99.9 percent of the time, if combined with energy storage and fossil fuel backup for the rare times when clean energy alone was not enough. A mix of wind power, solar power and storage in batteries and fuel cells could exceed electricity demand while keeping costs low, the scientists found. The report, by the University of Delaware and Delaware Technical Community College, used computer modeling that explored 28 billion combinations of renewable and storage possibilities, each tested with four years of weather and energy demand data.
