Four out of five Cambodians lack access to the national electricity grid which doesn't extend into remote parts of the country. The capital Phnom Penh is the only city in the country with a reliable electricity supply. Out in the countryside, the population depends for power on environmentally damaging diesel generators. But things are starting to change: the SME Renewables company develops units that convert biomass into energy, enabling rural businesses to use affordable and greener energy. Cambodian solar company Kamworks is also helping the country switch to cleaner energy.
