home wind generator - Clipper Windpower Announces Sales Contract With Minnesota Power For Delivery Of 25 MW Of Liberty Wind Turbines

Carpinteria, California (PRWEB) April 20, 2007

Clipper Windpower Plc today announced that it will supply ten units, or 25 megawatts (MW) of Clipper's 2.5 MW Liberty wind turbines to Minnesota Power for the first utility-scale wind energy project to be built in Northern Minnesota within the Iron Range Laurentian Divide.

A long-time purchaser of renewable energy, including hydropower, biomass and wind energy, once built, the Project will represent Minnesota Power's first ownership of a wind energy project. The Project supports legislation put in place earlier this year by Minnesota Governor Pawlenty requiring energy companies to provide 25 percent of power from renewable sources by 2025. Currently about 900 MW of wind energy capacity are installed in Minnesota, enough to supply the electricity needs of over 250,000 average American homes on an annual basis, and offset more than 3.4 billion pounds of carbon dioxide which would be released each year if the same amount of electricity were generated using the nation's average energy generation mix.

"The great State of Minnesota and thought-leading companies like Minnesota Power are moving the needle toward energy sustainability for our nation, setting exemplary renewable energy examples for other states," said James G.P. Dehlsen, Chairman and CEO of Clipper Windpower. "We are pleased to supply our Midwestern-grown Liberty wind turbines for Northern Minnesota's first wind energy development."

With wind turbine delivery expected in 2007, in addition to turbine supply, Clipper will provide installation supervision, and operation and maintenance services. The wind turbines will be built at Clipper's manufacturing facility in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Clipper's 2.5 MW Liberty machine is the largest wind turbine built in the United States.

Minnesota Power, a division of ALLETE, is a provider of energy services in the upper Midwest and provides electricity in a 26,000-square-mile electric service territory in northeastern Minnesota. Minnesota Power supplies retail electric service to 137,000 customers and wholesale electric service to 16 municipalities.
