Solar Electricity - Types of metering for solar power

There are 2 types of metering that have been offered in NSW - gross metering and net metering. For those that signed up for solar by October 27 2010, they will receive a 60c feed in tariff until December 31 2016. After that, a 20c feed in tariff was offered for those that signed up by April 2011 (the feed in tariff covered the same period - until Dec 31 2016). Currently NSW offers a net feed in tariff, which means you use the power and thereby reduce your bill by whatever you would have been charged per kwH for that electricity. Because the cost of power varies from 18c to over 40c, your exact 'payback period' can be calculated. Note: in NSW you are not rewarded well under a net feed in tariff for producing more power than you consume - so system design and size is critical.
