Innovative grid-level battery maker Aquion Energy is going from university spinoff to major manufacturer. Its environmentally friendly aqueous hybird ion batteries, about the size of a 50-pound breadbox, can be strung together to create modules to store renewable energy, which to date has lacked a viable storage options. This Carnegie Mellon University spinoff has its R&D headquarters in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville neighborhood, and will employ more than 400 in a manufacturing facility near New Stanton, Westmoreland County, by 2015.
